Emergency Fund
Emergency Fund Calculator
Size an emergency fund as essential monthly expenses times the months of cover you want, then compare it with what you already hold.
What to include in expenses
Use essential costs: rent or EMI, food, utilities, insurance premia, school fees and minimum debt payments. Discretionary spending can sit outside the core target.
Emergency fund
Target = Monthly expenses × Months of cover
Compare the target with what you already hold in liquid savings to see the gap.
Frequently asked questions
How many months should I keep?
Households often use 3–12 months depending on job stability, dependants and other insurance. This tool does not pick a number for you.
Should investments count?
Count only money you can access quickly without a large loss. Equity SIPs are usually a poor emergency stash.
Is this the same as FIRE?
No. An emergency fund is a short cash buffer. FIRE is a long-term portfolio meant to cover living costs indefinitely at a withdrawal rate.
